Organizational Background

Founded in 2016, Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ), a project of the Tides Center, is a multi-state organization that aims to win new safety priorities in large incarceration states across the country. At a time of immense opportunity, ASJ partners with leaders and advocates to advance state criminal justice reform through policy advocacy, coalition building, research, education, and strategic communications. ASJ also brings together diverse crime survivors and people with past convictions to advance policies that help communities most harmed by crime and violence. ASJ’s sister organization, Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ), has been leading state advocacy efforts to replace over-incarceration in California with new safety priorities for the last six years. With a substantial California staff and a strong track record, CSJ operates as ASJ’s flagship state advocacy effort. Additionally, Alliance for Safety and Justice Action Fund, a project of Tides Advocacy, is the 501 (c)4 arm of both ASJ and CSJ.

 

Position Summary

Shortly after Californians for Safety and Justice began, organizational leaders launched a new program called Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice to organize diverse survivors of crime across California to weigh in on criminal justice and public safety policy to expand protections and support for all victims of crime. As the work in California grew nationally, so did the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice (CSSJ) program. Today, the program has 42,000 members across the country, and actively champions reforms in the nation’s largest states. 10,000 of those members are in California. In California, like in other states we work in, the work of Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice is a central component of our work – representing the heart of our organization. We have five chapters in the state, regular meetings and trainings, and many leadership development opportunities for our survivor members.

 

We are seeking a CA CSSJ Statewide Manager to manage CA’s extensive membership engagement activities for our Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice membership program, focused on organizing survivors of crime. The CA CSSJ Statewide Manager will be the leading “face” of CSSJ in the state, managing offline member recruitment and maintenance, developing relationships with members, and ensuring members, partners, and allies are aware of our bills. This position will work side by side with in-state capacity staff to engage state partners and develop relationships with electeds at the state level, represent CSJ and mobilize people at the capitol, and build our CSSJ chapter and member base in CA. This position requires someone who is knowledgeable in advocacy work, civic engagement, organizing — and understands how to advance change in a trauma-informed way.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities

Civic Engagement & Chapter Development (40%)

  • Work with Membership Engagement staff to build the CSSJ chapter and member base and identify and cultivate new leaders within the CSSJ movement; guide internal staff on membership, policy and training needs in CA
  • Provide internal leadership for the CSSJ program in CA; serve as lead for CA CSSJ internally and externally to build a presence with media, legislators and all stakeholders
  • Manage all contracts and subgrants related to CSSJ work in CA
  • Develop, manage and attend all events related to CSSJ work in CA

 

Policy Advocacy & Constituency Building (40%)

  • Work with the policy teams to garner support for bills (letters and otherwise), and map out a plan for critical legislative visits for our members (in-district/in capitol)
  • Collaborate with the Policy Department, CA TimeDone Statewide Manager, CA Partnerships Manager, CA Government Affairs Director, and in-state directors across staff to develop and implement a legislative strategy, garner ongoing support and monitor progress for bills
  • Garner support for CSSJ work within the CA landscape; manage relationships with key stakeholders and allies in state
  • Meet and maintain relationships with legislators about the CSSJ program, including Sacramento stakeholders representing labor, education, and grassroots organizations

 

CSSJ Communications (20%)

  • Work with the Digital Team and relevant staff to support the execution of the  digital plan for CSSJ and secure supporters
  • Partner with Communications staff to identify authors for op-eds
  • Collaborate with the CA Public Affairs Manager to respond to requests around CSSJ related media
  • Respond to all requests that come in from our CSSJ member base, including all coalition requests around CSSJ work
  • Represent the CSSJ program at funder convenings, as applicable

 

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience working in advocacy, campaigns, or project management
  • Strong statewide organizing experience
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including elected officials and community leaders
  • Prior experience interacting with the criminal justice system is preferred
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a deep commitment to social and racial justice
  • Excellent relationship management skills are absolutely essential for this position; strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence required
  • Proficiency using office productivity software, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, listen and learn from feedback, make decisions in accordance with established policies and see projects through to completion
  • Comfortable with Mac laptops generally and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel in particular, Google Drive experience a plus

 

Organizational Relationship

Reports to the CSJ Executive Director.

 

Physical Demands

Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Some travel may be required.

 

Work Environment

CA based. Some travel required. Work hours, dependent on deadlines, may sometimes be odd and include occasional night or weekend assignments.
