Who You Are: Position Summary

The CA CSSJ Membership Engagement Associate supports the coordination of California’s Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice membership program, focused on organizing survivors of crime. Under the guidance of the CA CSSJ Statewide Manager,  this position will support the advancement of the CSSJ membership and organizing model by collaborating with in-state staff to develop CSSJ’s member base in CA and support alignment to the multi-state organizing model for CSSJ. This will include supporting the administrative and operational functions of the CA CSSJ program, training, and the advancement of CSSJ’s online membership via digital and phone engagement across the state to develop a strong member base that is actively engaged in CSJ campaigns. 


What You’ll Do

Support the Growth and Development of CSSJ Chapters and Leaders (40%)

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for CA Chapter Coordinators; support them in execution of their work plans and deliverables
  • Support the CA CSSJ Statewide Manager in managing and maintaining a membership base of volunteer leaders and members
  • Support the CA CSSJ Statewide Manager in conducting meetings with crime survivors and organizations on a regular basis to recruit new members and recruit volunteer leaders to take on roles within chapters and state advocacy
  • Support the development and execution of chapter meetings and events with chapter leaders and partners; provide administrative support, strategies, and tools to execute deliverables related to chapter growth and campaigns
    • Ensure all forms and sign-in sheets are collected from Chapter Coordinators following meetings and events and file for record keeping purposes
  • With guidance from the CS CSSJ Statewide Manager, work with Chapter Coordinators and chapter leaders to track goals around team growth and action


Member Engagement (25%)

  • In collaboration with CSSJ member engagement staff, manage and lead all phone banking and text banking campaigns in CA, including:
    • recruit and members and coordinators to support text and phone banking
    • draft phone banking and text banking scripts​​
    • run strategic and effective phone banking and text banking shifts that include consistent engagement with members
    • conduct “train the trainer” trainings for staff and volunteers to learn how to use the phone and text banking systems
  • Support and coordinate with CSSJ staff to increase membership and member engagement; communicate effectively with team members from different departments to ensure the success of chapters and organizational goals
  • Collaborate with the CA CSSJ Statewide Manager and members to organize chapter meetings, events, healing vigils, community forums, and other tactics as needed to reach campaign goals


Training Coordination & Facilitation (25%) 

  • In partnership with CA CSSJ Statewide Manager and CSSJ’s Training department, coordinate, recruit and facilitate training for survivors and organizations using the curriculum developed by Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice
  • Organize and facilitate trainings for chapter coordinators, crime survivors, and partner organizations in CA, and for systems leaders and allies interested in the best strategies to support underserved crime victims; maintain ongoing relationships with CSSJ trainers and leaders in CA
  • Ensure that the CSSJ leadership development curriculum is being implemented according to the annual strategic plan and the organizational calendar, and ensure that all CSSJ chapters are utilizing the CSSJ curriculum and are supported in conducting trainings in CA
  • In collaboration with the CA CSSJ Statewide Manager and CSSJ Training department, ensure regular evaluation of attendance and membership growth for CSSJ trainings in CA and ensure that CSSJ trainings are updated and improved as feedback is provided
  • Maintain a calendar of all CA CSSJ trainings; ensure CSJ staff are apprised of the training schedule and Communication/Social Media staff are promoting the trainings as needed


CSSJ Communications (10%)

  • In partnership with the CA CSSJ Statewide Manager, execute member engagement plans for CA CSSJ, including text messaging, emails, social media
  • Support SMS and digital communication with members and the execution of SMS and digital engagement strategies, including:
    • a weekly call to support the SMS calendar 
    • managing a shift schedule
    • developing scripts 
    • coordinating with staff across CSSJ, Communications and IT to ensure quality communication, a strong ladder of engagement and accurate database tracking of member engagement
  • Partner with Communications staff to respond to requests around CSSJ related media


Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working in advocacy, campaigns, or project management
  • Strong training and facilitation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship development skills 
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a deep commitment to social and racial justice
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, listen and learn from feedback, make decisions in accordance with established policies and see projects through to completion


Preferred Experience & Qualifications

  • Community based, grassroots organizing experience
  • Experience working with communities directly impacted by crime or the criminal justice system 
  • Proficiency using office productivity software, including Google Workspace, Asana, Slack, and Microsoft Office Suite


Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Occasional travel will be required
  • Requires use of a desktop, laptop, or video display terminal
  • Ability to communicate, receive and understand information through oral and written communication and proofread and check documents for accuracy
  • Requires communicating information with co-workers, stakeholders and/or the public; reading correspondence, instructions and/or technical documents; writing correspondence and/or reports and filling in forms
