Organizational Background 

Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ) is a national advocacy organization that aims to replace ineffective criminal justice system policies with what works to keep people safe. We represent diverse crime survivors through our Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice program as well as people living with old records through our TimeDone program as key public safety stakeholders. ASJ brings our members together with state leaders and coalition partners to win reforms that stop cycles of crime, reduce costly incarceration, and make communities safer. We support a range of “shared safety” reforms, including crime prevention, community health, rehabilitation, economic mobility, and trauma recovery. Position Summary  

TimeDone is the fastest growing program in Alliance for Safety and Justice. TimeDone is a nationwide membership community of more than 140,000 people living with a past arrest or conviction. Together, we’re building strong families and communities by organizing to end post-conviction poverty. Since our founding, we’ve advocated for policies that provided more than 5 million people with an opportunity to clear an old record. TimeDone’s work includes: recruitment and member organizing, member support, member activations and events, and policy advocacy to eliminate the barriers to stability facing people with old records. 

Reporting to the CEO of ASJ, who is also the National Director of TimeDone, the TimeDone Managing Director will lead the day-to-day operations of all aspects of the TimeDone program to ensure the vision for TimeDone’s growth, development and impact are executed and implemented effectively. TimeDone is a growing team with a lot of new staff and members, and a big vision. The Managing Director will be the bridge between the vision and the staff, contractors, resources, and members who are ready to achieve that vision with the right level of guidance, coordination and skill-building. This is a highly motivated team of directly-impacted people who work in diverse states across the country and with members experiencing real-time barriers to stability. This is a unique leadership opportunity to lead, support and develop the largest membership program in the nation of people with old records advocating for reform.  

 

Primary Responsibilities 

Reporting to the CEO, who launched, developed and led TimeDone from inception, the Managing Director’s core responsibilities include: 

 

Staff supervision and leadership development (50%) 

  • Supervise the TimeDone staff team of eight staff, with additional staff likely in the coming year. The staff includes digital membership acquisition and recruitment chapter development and maintenance, membership coordination and leadership development, events, member referrals, training and support, member activation and mobilization, social media, storytelling and policy advocacy. 
  • Ensure staff achieve membership recruitment goals, membership activation goals, and membership mobilization goals.  
  • Ensure staff execute membership support plans that connect members with opportunities for stability. 
  • Ensure staff execute TimeDone events effectively and in alignment with the TimeDone vision.
  • Train staff as needed to ensure staff have increasing capacity to carry out their roles and grow with the organization.

 

Program planning and implementation (25%) 

  • Plan TimeDone weekly, monthly, and annual strategic plan, goals and benchmarks. 
  • Ensure staff actively participate in planning and have a unified understanding of how to achieve those plans.
  • Ensure event planning, budgetary planning, staffing and member recruitment planning develops in alignment with the annual strategic plan, goals and benchmarks.  
  • Oversee all TimeDone subgrants and contracts.

 

Partnership management (12%) 

  • Represent TimeDone in high level partnerships as needed. 
  • Ensure TimeDone engages with partners effectively and responsively.  

 

Interdepartmental coordination (12%) 

  • In partnership with the CEO
    • Work with Operations to ensure close communication and collaboration on all operations related activities 
    • Work with the State Advocacy division to set and execute the TimeDone policy agenda in each state 
    • Work with the Federal Advocacy division to set and execute national advocacy agenda, including implementation of the National Reentry Association  
    • Work with the marketing and Communications division to execute an aligned marketing and communications plan for TimeDone
    • Work with ASJ’s other flagship programs, Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice and Californians for Safety and Justice, to ensure strong communication, collaboration and close engagement on aligned priorities  

 

Experience & Qualifications 

The successful candidate will be adaptable, flexible, and collaborative. Their work will be  driven by strategic thinking and executed with rigor and efficiency. They will have a  keen eye for detail, patience, and a commitment to criminal justice reform. Specific skills and experience include: 

  • 10 years of experience leading and managing staff in nonprofit advocacy settings, with an emphasis on experience managing remote staff.
  • Experience managing budgets, human resources, events, member recruitment, online and offline activism and engagement with elected officials  
  • Experience with grassroots organizing, criminal justice reform, policy reform campaigning. 
  • Experience working effectively with people directly impacted by the justice system 
  • Impeccable attention to detail and analytical thinking. 
  • Highly organized and deadline-driven to help keep a team on track to advance multiple assignments at once in a fast-paced environment; strong project  management skills. 
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships with internal and external  stakeholders. 
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a deep commitment to social  and racial justice. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and listen and learn from  feedback. 
  • Ability to thrive in a busy, multi-tasking, and time-pressured environment. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in public affairs or strategic communications,  preferably in a political or issue advocacy campaign setting; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • High degree of familiarity with core areas of focus for the organization: criminal  justice, public safety, and/or community/public health. 
  • Prior experience managing or working closely with contractors or consultants..

  • Ability to communicate, receive and understand information through oral and written communication and proofread and check documents for accuracy
  • Requires communicating information with co-workers, stakeholders and/or the public; reading correspondence, instructions and/or technical documents; writing correspondence and/or reports and filling in forms
