Organizational Background

Founded in 2016, Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ) is a multi-state organization that aims to win new safety priorities in large incarceration states across the country. ASJ partners with leaders and advocates to advance state criminal justice reform through policy advocacy, coalition building, research, education, and strategic communications. ASJ also represents diverse victims of crime to advance policies that provide more safety and help, and people with old records to advance policies that provide more redemption and freedom. ASJ’s partner organization, Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ), has been leading state advocacy efforts to replace over-incarceration in California with new safety priorities. CSJ operates as ASJ’s flagship state advocacy effort. Additionally, Alliance for Safety and Justice Action Fund, a project of Tides Advocacy, and Action for Safety and Justice are the 501 (c)4 arms of ASJ and CSJ.

 

Position Summary

ASJ seeks a TimeDone Northeast Regional Manager to manage the organization’s national TimeDone campaign to reduce and remove barriers to reintegration for individuals with past convictions. The person in this role will be the face of regional organizing for the TimeDone program in the Northeast region of the U.S. in which ASJ operates (MI, OH, IL, PA). In this role, the Regional Manager will work side by side with the Organizing & Partnerships division, State Directors, and Advocacy division to engage state partners and develop relationships with electeds at the state level, represent ASJ and mobilize people at the various state capitols, and build our TimeDone chapter and member base regionally. This position requires an experienced professional who is knowledgeable in all aspects of advocacy work including organizing, policy, research, communications, government relations, strategy development, and civic engagement in order to effectively represent the TimeDone program within the regional landscape and successfully form relationships with key stakeholders.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Civic Engagement & Chapter Development (60%)

  • Work with the Membership Engagement department within the Organizing division to develop and implement a TimeDone Civic Engagement Plan; identify and cultivate new leaders within the TimeDone movement; build TimeDone chapters and member base in the Northeast region
  • Identify elected officials across the Northeast regions to support the TimeDone agenda
  • Maintain relationships with all grassroots partners doing criminal justice work in the Northeast region
  • Be responsive to all coalition requests around TimeDone work for the Northeast region
  • Garner support for TimeDone work within the Northeast region; manage relationships with key stakeholders and allies
  • Manage all contracts and subgrants related to TimeDone work in the Northeast region
  • Develop, manage and attend all events related to TimeDone work in the Northeast region
  • Identify, select and train TimeDone delegates in the Northeast region
  • Represent TimeDone regionally in partnerships and relationships with influencers and public officials
  • Identify and cultivate key reentry, business, labor, and faith partners in ASJ regions
  • Organize RAP sheet events in MI, OH, IL, PA with champions and partners, with support from the Organizing & Partnerships division
  • Build and work within coalitions to pass sunsets in states

TimeDone Communications (10%)

  • Work with the TimeDone Social Media & Community Associate and relevant staff:
    • to develop a digital plan for TimeDone and secure supporters for the TimeDone program
    • to identify influencers to engage in TimeDone digital work
    • to respond to all request that come in from our TimeDone member base in the Northeast region
  • Partner with Communications staff to identify authors for TimeDone op-eds and to respond to all requests around TimeDone related media in the Northeast region
  • Represent the TimeDone program at funder convenings or events, as applicable
  • Host statewide TimeDone membership calls with resources
  • Work with the Organizing & Partnerships division to engage and enroll online supporters in offline membership calls and events

Research & Policy Development (30%)

  • Collaborate with the ASJ Research team to:
    • develop and write a Sunsets Clause
    • develop collateral research for target counties within the Northeast region
    • provide direction for TimeDone related research within the DOJ and local criminal justice system databases
    • develop research papers delineating the issues with lifetime disenfranchisement
    • provide technical assistance to partner organizations around post-conviction relief processes
    • develop all TimeDone policy and related fact sheets and one-pagers for TimeDone bills in collaboration with the Advocacy division, and
    • manage contractors working on TimeDone research in the Northeast region
  • Work with Advocacy staff to identify and vet potential TimeDone bill authors, garner support for TimeDone bills (letters and otherwise), and map out a plan for critical legislative visits (in-district/in capitol in the Northeast region) for TimeDone bills
  • Collaborate with the Advocacy team, State Directors, and other staff to develop and implement a legislative strategy, garner ongoing support and monitor progress for TimeDone related bills
  • Cultivate and build external organizational relationships around TimeDone legislative support
  • Meet and maintain relationships with legislators about the TimeDone program, including stakeholders representing labor, education, and grassroots organizations

 

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience working in advocacy, campaigns, or project management
  • Strong multi-state organizing experience; demonstrated track record building, organizing and retaining membership around a social justice issue
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including elected officials and community leaders
  • Experience working with diverse communities and a deep commitment to social and racial justice; prior experience interacting with the criminal justice system is preferred
  • Excellent relationship management skills are absolutely essential for this position; strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence required
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, listen and learn from feedback, make decisions in accordance with established policies and see projects through to completion
  • Comfortable with Mac laptops, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; Google Drive experience and project management software (Asana, Slack) a plus

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • This position is based in the Northeast region of the US; MI, OH, IL, or PA required; option to remote telecommute.
  • Occasional travel and/or weekend assignments may be required.
  • Requires use of a desktop, laptop, or video display terminal
  • Requires routine physical movements with limited physical exertion
  • Ability to communicate, receive and understand information through oral and written communication and proofread and check documents for accuracy
  • Requires communicating information with co-workers, stakeholders and/or the public; reading correspondence, instructions and/or technical documents; writing correspondence and/or reports and filling in forms
