Smart Sentencing

Sentencing policy shouldn’t be driven by slogans.
One-size-fits-all policy approaches usually waste public resources and fail to reduce recidivism. We advocate for a balanced approach to sentencing that holds people accountable while also focusing on requirements that reduce future harm like rehabilitation, restorative justice, treatment and workforce readiness.
Examples of smart sentencing include:
- Structured treatment and accountability programs proven to reduce crime
- Earned credit programs and incentivized rehabilitation
- Right-size probation and parole terms to align with what has been proven to have the biggest impact on recidivism
- Formal consideration at charging and sentencing for PTSD, victimization, mental health problems or addiction
